The archaeological site of Harappa is located in Sahiwal District, Punjab Province, Pakistan. Situated in the floodplain of the river Ravi, these mounded ruins are well known as the site of a major urban center of the Indus or Harappan Civilization (ca. 2600/2500-2000/1900 BC). Beginning before 3300 BC as a small village on a silty river terrace, the settlement grew to a large city covering more than 100 hectares during the Harappa Phase (ca. 2600 BC – ca. 1900 BC).
