shahid-afridiShahid Afridi, Pakistan’s all-rounder criticized Australia after it decided to cancel its two – Test tour of Bangladesh indicating terrorism fears. Afridi said that tours should not be cancelled over such issues as maximum security measures have been taken. The tour was cancelled after official warnings of militant attacks.
Nazmul Hassan, Head of Bangladesh Cricket Board commentated that satisfactory security steps have been taken. Many countries face such reservations but this never stops cricket.
Afridi voiced his opinion in Karachi while meeting Pakistan and Bangladesh’s women’s team. Afridi further suggested that Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka should put up a more united front to combat terrorism threats as countries have suffered immensely with international teams not coming to Pakistan.
In 2009, after a deadly terrorism attack on the Sri Lanka team in Lahore, international cricket was suspended in Pakistan. In May, Pakistan hosted its first cricket event after 6 years when Zimbabwe Cricket Team toured for a short limited over-series. This initiated hope that more international teams may also visit Pakistan in future.
Afridi appreciated Bangladesh’s decision to send their women’s team to Pakistan and cited it as a good sign. He added that this was the first good step before sending the men’s cricket team.
Athar Ali Khan, the former Bangladesh opener said that Afridi’s visit was a source of great encouragement and inspiration which will also go the distance in improving the players’ performance in the last match. Kahn has played 19-one day internationals for Bangladesh.
Pakistan defeated Bangladesh in both 20 -20 matches and leads the series 1-0.
