Location:
Canberra is a modern city just over ninety years old, chosen as Australia’s national capital in 1908 as a diplomatic solution when both Melbourne and Sydney wanted the role. Its name comes from the local Aboriginal word ‘Kamberra’ meaning ‘meeting place’.
Why Canberra:
Canberra is home to a number of world-class research and education institutions, and education forms an important part of our community and economy.
Why study in Canberra, Australia’s capital city?
- The most educated city in Australia,
- We offer a world-class education,
- We’re the best city in the world to live in,
- More on-campus accommodation than any other city in Australia,
- Best of both worlds; a well-designed city with immense opportunities
We are a global city with a multicultural population and we welcome students and world-class academics from around Australia and the world to our community.
Canberra’s universities have slightly different roles. ANU is a prestigious university with a strong research focus and large post-graduate program (which is popular with interstate and study abroad students). The University of Canberra is more teaching focused and satisfies local demand for university places.
The universities are fairly small by Australian standards, with a combined enrolment around 35,000. For both universities, around a quarter of students are international students.
ANU is among Australia’s top-ranked universities. It has an outstanding research reputation, is rated highly by students, and its graduates do well in terms of getting jobs or doing further study.
